Acne Scars vs. Hyperpigmentation: How to Tell and Treat Them

Acne Scars vs. Hyperpigmentation: How to Tell and Treat Them

Before heading to a party, when you are beautifully dressed and all set to steal the show, the only thing that comes between is a group of a few pimples. No matter how hard you try to conceal them, they leave their long-lasting mark on your face. These stubborn pimples and acne leave behind two types of residues: scars and hyperpigmentation.

Acne Scars vs. Hyperpigmentation: What’s the Difference?

Hyperpigmentation after acne is pretty common. One person out of five faces acne spots and scarring, leading to a series of treatments. But before jumping to the treatment plan, it is critical to understand the basics of dark spots vs. scars. Continue reading to learn the differences between these two similar-looking after-shocks of acne and pimples:

Definition

Hyperpigmentation is a skin condition caused by an excess of melanin deposits, resulting in darker skin. Usually, these dark marks are small and flat, and emerge in the same locations as the original acne spots. Conversely, acne scars may form after a breakout harms the skin. This damage can impact the skin's collagen, resulting in indentations or elevated regions on the skin’s surface.

Appearance and Diagnosis

Run your hand through your face, and if you feel textural changes like indentations or raised areas, these identify acne scars. They are the textural changes in your skin. In contrast, hyperpigmentation is just a change of color on a part of your skin, and the skin remains smooth to the touch. Moreover, hyperpigmentation is just discoloration from pink to brown and usually goes away with time, with proper care and acne discoloration treatment.

Types of Scars and Hyperpigmentation

Acne scars typically categorize into three primary types categories:

  • Ice pick scars are deep, narrow, and pitted indentations that penetrate the skin. Typically arising from cystic acne, they manifest as small but noticeable holes on the skin’s surface.
  • Rolling scars feature smooth edges and a wavy look. They form an uneven, rolling texture on the surrounding skin due to fibrous bands of tissue that develop between the skin and the deeper subcutaneous layer.
  • Boxcar scars are broad, well-defined scars that resemble those produced by chickenpox. They occur due to extensive acne, resulting in an angular, indented appearance on the skin’s surface, typically where an acne lesion once existed.

However, hyperpigmentation can also be grouped under three names:

  • Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) can happen after your skin experiences injuries or inflammation, like when you have acne. It appears as flat, discolored spots that vary significantly in color, depending on the individual's skin tone.
  • Melasma leads to annoying dark brown to gray patches that frequently show up on the face. It’s commonly associated with hormonal changes that may occur during pregnancy or as a result of contraceptive use.
  • Sunspots, often called age spots or liver spots, these marks result from prolonged sun exposure. They typically manifest as small, dark spots on areas that get a lot of sunlight, including the face, hands, and arms.

Causes of Formation

The key pointer when looking for the basics of dark spots vs. scars is their cause of formation. After pimples form, collagen formation is the body’s reaction to heal the skin. However, scars develop when the skin either produces an excess or a deficiency of collagen. Too much collagen can lead to elevated acne scars, while a lack of collagen may create depressions on the skin’s surface. Conversely, hyperpigmentation is characterized by dark spots or patches on the skin, mainly due to excess melanin production. This excess melanin can arise from various factors, including acne inflammation, hormonal changes, and prolonged sun exposure.

Fading and Treatment

Several over-the-counter drugs can be used to fade acne scars and hyperpigmentation. While both result from acne formation, the treatment goal differs for spots and blemishes. The goal of treating post-acne scars is to enhance skin texture and diminish scar visibility, primarily by promoting collagen production. In contrast, the aim for hyperpigmentation treatment is to lighten dark spots and achieve a uniform skin tone.

Post-acne skin repair for scars comprises a detailed process. Steroid injections can soften and reduce the size of raised scars, and micro-needling can help promote collagen production and improve skin texture. On the other hand, topical ointments and laser therapy can lessen hyperpigmented marks, making the skin free of blemishes.

How to treat acne marks (hyperpigmentation)? The best cream for hyperpigmentation can comprise Hydroquinone, retinoids, vitamin C, or Niacinamide. These powerful agents work well to fade dark spots. Dermal fillers and chemical peels can alleviate the signs associated with acne scars, with a few ointments that should be applied as prescribed by the physician.
